Inaugural International Exhibition for Jeju Museum of Art
SU:MBISORI
Su:mbisori is a Special Exhibition to commemorate the inauguration of Jeju Museum of Art. This exhibition was featured to explain the unique cultural code Jeju has within the contemporary art context, when its heavenly natural factors and environmental energy sources of future generations such as water, light and wind, as well as the breathing sound of haenyo, called su:mbisori encounters contemporary art concepts.
In the Jeju dialect, the word for the exhibition theme ¡°su:mbisori¡± translates to the sound haenyo (lady divers that dive into the sea without oxygen tanks) make when they reach the surface of the water after they cannot hold their breath any longer. This is the catharsis of Jeju that integrally links reality and idealism, civilization and nature, and life and death. It is also the fierce reality of life and a metaphor that describes our modern daily life.€
This is a large scale exhibition featuring 36 contemporary artists from 11 nations worldwide. These artists are currently active in Europe, North America, the Middle East and East Asia.

Chang Lee-suok Exhibition is about this artist that resembles the sea. This Exhibition will display a collection of Chang¡¯s artworks owned by the Jeju Museum of Arts. Through this Exhibition, visitors will be able to appreciate not only Jeju¡¯s impressive natural surroundings but the power and sentiments of Jeju¡¯s people, and how they withstand and overcome their rigorous and hard life. When observing Chang¡¯s Haenyodo, the painting that he has devoted all his life to draw about haenyo or lady divers, we can witness people¡¯s faith for the sea and their modest dwellings. Furthermore, the fact that Chang has donated all the displayed paintings for Jeju residents adds more value and meaning to this Exhibition.
